Should You Reinsulate Your Home This Spring Chicago
Should you even bother reinsulating this spring?
This came up on a job last week
We were out in a house near Wheaton.
Ready to start your insulation project?
They didn’t call asking for new insulation. Just said the upstairs never felt right. Winter was rough, now spring hit and it still felt off. Not freezing, not hot… just inconsistent. That’s usually how it gets described.
We see this a lot.
First look, nothing jumped out
Honestly, at first glance, it didn’t look terrible.
There was insulation up there. Enough to where someone might say, “yeah that’s fine.” But once you start digging into it a little, you could tell it had settled. Some areas were thinner than others. A few spots looked like they’d been disturbed over the years. You could even feel a slight temperature shift depending on where you were standing.
Not great.
Why spring is when people notice it
Winter kind of forces the issue.
But spring… that’s when things get weird. Temperatures bounce around, humidity starts creeping in, and the house just doesn’t regulate the way it should. You’ll get one room feeling fine and another feeling stale or stuffy.
Kind of like trying to mix hot and cold water and never getting it right.
That part mattered.
What we ended up doing
We didn’t just pile more insulation on top.
We checked airflow first. Sealed up some small gaps, leveled things out, then added new blown-in insulation where it actually needed it. Nothing excessive. Just brought it back to where it should’ve been.
Took most of the day.
The homeowner came up near the end and just stood there for a second. Said, “I didn’t realize it was this uneven.”
Yeah… happens more than you’d think.
…and this is where people get stuck
They ask if they should just wait.
Wait until summer. Wait until something “breaks.” But insulation doesn’t really fail all at once. It just slowly stops doing its job. So, by the time you notice it, it’s already been underperforming for a while.
We see this a lot. People wait. Then wait again.
And then they end up doing it in the middle of July when the attic feels like an oven. Not ideal.
One random thing from that house
There was a hallway that felt different.
Not dramatically. Just slightly warmer than the rest of the house. You wouldn’t think much of it unless you walked through it a few times. But that kind of inconsistency usually points back to the attic.
Small stuff like that tells you more than you think.
If you’re on the fence
If your house has been feeling a little off, there’s usually a reason.
Doesn’t mean you need a full overhaul. Sometimes it’s minor. Sometimes it’s not. You can take a look at our insulation services to get an idea of what we check when we come out.
We wrapped this one up, cleaned everything out, and headed on to the next job over in Downers Grove. Nothing flashy. Just fixing what wasn’t working anymore.
