Madison Cellulose Blow-In After Vermiculite Removal

Madison > Blog > Madison Cellulose Blow-In After Vermiculite Removal

We were out on a job in Madison this week where the homeowner originally just wanted to “add some insulation” because certain rooms in the house were always colder than the rest.

Pretty normal call honestly.

But once we got up into the attic, we found old vermiculite insulation sitting underneath some patchwork fiberglass that had clearly been added years later. You could tell different owners had tried fixing the problem over time without really addressing what was already up there.

That’s usually how it goes.

The attic had layers of old problems

At first glance it didn’t even look terrible.

Then we started moving through it a little more carefully and realized how uneven everything actually was. Some areas barely had coverage at all while other sections were piled higher for no real reason. The attic felt stale too. Dusty. Hot. Kind of had that old construction smell mixed with insulation that had been sitting untouched forever.

Not great.

A lot of homeowners in older Madison homes still have vermiculite in the attic and don’t even realize it because newer insulation was blown over the top at some point.

Why we removed the vermiculite first

This homeowner asked if we could just blow new cellulose over everything and move on.

Honestly, no.

When vermiculite is present, the better long-term move is usually removal first so the attic can be cleaned up properly and inspected underneath. It also gives us a chance to air seal areas that normally stay buried forever under old insulation.

That part mattered.

Once everything was cleared out, you could actually see how much conditioned air had been escaping through wiring penetrations and gaps around fixtures. Kind of like trying to heat a house with windows cracked open all winter.

Cellulose made more sense for this house

After removal, we installed fresh cellulose blow-in insulation throughout the attic.

We use cellulose a lot in Wisconsin because it settles in nicely around irregular framing and helps create a much more consistent thermal blanket across the attic floor. Especially in older homes around Madison, Middleton, and Sun Prairie where framing spacing is not always perfectly uniform.

The homeowner actually noticed the difference before we even finished packing up. Upstairs already felt less drafty by the evening.

That was a good sign.

One thing we noticed halfway through

And this is slightly off topic, but older attics always tell a story once the insulation comes out.

You see old electrical runs, previous repairs, random boards laid across joists from somebody working up there twenty years ago. This attic even had an old newspaper scrap tucked near one corner under the insulation. Probably hadn’t seen daylight in decades.

Kind of cool honestly.

The house should feel a lot more balanced now

Before the project, the homeowner said certain rooms were always harder to keep comfortable during both summer and winter. That uneven temperature issue usually points back to attic insulation problems faster than people realize.

Especially once old insulation starts compacting down.

Now the attic has a clean, consistent layer of cellulose with much better overall coverage than what was there before. Simple upgrade, but a big improvement for comfort and efficiency moving forward.

If your home still has older attic insulation or you suspect vermiculite may be present, it’s worth having it looked at before just adding more insulation over the top. You can learn more about our attic insulation services and insulation upgrades for older homes.
